PLANNED PARENTHOOD ENDORSES CHRIS BUBSER FOR CONGRESS
Endorsement Underscores Bubser’s Commitment to Family Health and Reproductive Choice for Women
February 17, Victorville, CA -- Today the campaign of Chris Bubser, Democrat running for Congress in California’s 8th district, announced a powerful endorsement from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Chris has accumulated endorsements from a range of other influential women’s organizations, including the National Organization for Women and the National Women’s Political Caucus, as well as feminist leader Dolores Huerta and a host of labor unions and members of Congress.
“Chris has demonstrated strong support for sexual and reproductive health and rights, and we feel confident she will be a dedicated advocate for Planned Parenthood health centers and the people they serve when she is elected to the House in 2020,” said Planned Parenthood Action Fund Acting President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson.
“I am so honored to receive the support of Planned Parenthood, an organization that I have long supported,” said Bubser. “Planned Parenthood has been a beacon of hope for women, men, and their families for more than a century, providing accessible and affordable healthcare to anyone who needs it. The importance of this organization cannot be overstated and their health centers are often the only place women and their families can access preventive care like family planning, STI and HIV testing, wellness exams, and cancer screenings.”
Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, the organization’s local affiliate, operates one of its health centers just a few blocks from Bubser’s campaign headquarters in Victorville, CA. Nationally, Planned Parenthood operates more than 600 health centers, forming an integral part of the nation’s health care system by offering non-judgemental services to men and women who might otherwise be unable to see a healthcare provider due to skyrocketing healthcare costs.
Bubser’s leading Republican opponent, former Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, was twice given a 0% rating by Planned Parenthood and writes on his website that he thinks the organization should be defunded. During his tenure in the Assembly, Donnelly voted to deny State assistance for pregnant teen mothers and to prevent registered nurses from being able to dispense doctor-prescribed birth control to women who need it. The other leading Republican in the race for CA-08, current Assemblyman Jay Obernolte (AD-33), also received a 0% rating from Planned Parenthood in 2018. Thus women voters in the 8th district will be asked to choose between two men who feel it is their right to make decisions for their health, and Chris Bubser, a woman who will always fight to protect the rights of all women to make their own decisions when it comes to their health. Bubser added: “When it comes to a woman’s health, she should always have the final word and be able to consider the medical advice of her doctor. No politician, man or woman, has the right to make that decision for her.”
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational and electoral activity including legislative advocacy, voter education, and grassroots organizing.
The 8th Congressional District stretches along much of California’s eastern border, and includes parts of San Bernardino County, and all of Inyo and Mono counties. The district includes, among others, the communities of Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow, Bishop, Hesperia, Highland, Lone Pine, Mammoth Lakes, Needles, Trona, Twentynine Palms, Victorville, Yucaipa, and Yucca Valley, and Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks.
