OBERNOLTE REFUSES TO DEFEND VOTING RECORD IN NON-PARTISAN DEBATE FORUM
October 26, Victorville, CA -- Today the League of Women Voters announced that Jay Obernolte has refused to respond to an invitation to debate Chris Bubser for Congress in California’s 8th Congressional district. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan group with a long tradition of educating voters on candidates and issues.
“Jay’s refusal to debate me is both revealing and disappointing,” said Bubser. “Is he unable to defend his record? Will he be as evasive when his constituents want to engage with him on issues or hold him accountable for his votes?”.
Bubser added, “Ultimately, Jay Obernolte is cheating the public of an opportunity to make a side-by-side comparison of their choices. It’s such a disservice to voters.”
Since entering the race for California’s 8th Congressional District, Jay Obernolte has refused to acknowledge or address his record of:
Voting to allow insurers to deny coverage for lifesaving prescriptions.
Voting to cut $700 million in funding for Social Security and refusing to oppose turning Medicare into a private voucher system.
Voting to deny disabled veterans housing assistance and job training and voting to cut funding for the Barstow Veterans Home.
Calling legitimate coronavirus data a “scare tactic,” and refusing to wear a mask while sitting next to a pregnant colleague.
Taking money from big oil companies and then turning around and voting to roll back clean air and water protections.
Obernolte’s refusal to debate follows last month’s rebuke over campaign mail to voters in CA-08 which deliberately deceived voters. Vote Smart, a non-partisan voter information resource issued a complaint that he attacked Bubser with false information and incorrectly cited Vote Smart as a source. Vote Smart said in a statement that “Jay Obernolte is cheating the public out of their need for trusted, abundant, accurate information.”
