NON-PARTISAN GROUP CONDEMNS OBERNOLTE FOR KNOWINGLY MAKING “FALSE” CLAIMS ABOUT OPPONENT
September 24, Victorville, CA — A leading non-partisan group says Republican candidate for Congress Jay Obernolte’s latest mail to voters in CA-08 “deliberately deceives voters” by sharing “information he knows to be false” just as voters are receiving their ballots. VoteSmart.org provides free factual unbiased information on candidates and elected officials to all Americans. In its statement, the organization denounced Obernolte and his campaign for attacking his opponent Chris Bubser with false information and sourcing VoteSmart to provide credibility. According to the statement, VoteSmart.org described Obernolte’s actions as having occurred less than .05% in races nationally, underscoring how outlandish this misinformation tactic is used. PUBLIC STATEMENT Jay Obernolte, a candidate for the 8th Congressional District of California, has attacked his opponent, Christine Bubser, with information he knows to be false and used Vote Smart's name to give his accusations credibility. This kind of negative campaign activity deliberately deceives voters and is precisely the sort of tactic that Vote Smart attempts to counter with its factual database. By using Vote Smart's name to give credibility to these attacks, Jay Obernolte is cheating the public out of their need for trusted, abundant, accurate information. Vote Smart prohibits the use of its name and programs, including the Political Courage Test, in partisan political advertising. Additionally, this policy is posted on the Vote Smart website. This kind of behavior occurs in less than 0.05 percent of all races nationally.
