The 8th Congressional District seat will be open in 2020 now that Rep. Paul Cook, R-Yucca Valley, is campaigning to join the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors.
Several candidates had announced their intentions to run, including Democrat Chris Bubser and Peter Mathisen, who has no party affiliation. Republicans Jay Obernolte, an assemblyman from Big Bear Lake, and Jeremy Staat, an Iraq war veteran and former NFL player, entered the race after Cook’s Tuesday, Sept. 17, announcement.
Candidates have until Dec. 6 to file for the March 3 primary. If the incumbent does not file, the deadline is extended to Dec. 11. The four candidates have filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission.
