For Immediate Release
November 6, Victorville, CA - - Both the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 47 and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 36 announced today their decisions to endorse Chris Bubser, Democrat running for Congress in California’s 8th district. This follows the recent stamp of approval from the Inland Empire Labor Council, AFL-CIO. These unions had previously endorsed GOP Congressman Paul Cook, who is retiring in 2020.
“We are excited to back who we believe is the strongest Democratic candidate this area has seen in decades,” said Pat Lavin, Business Manager of IBEW 47. “In Chris we see a committed ally who believes in the right to bargain collectively, making it easier for workers to advocate for their rights on the job, receive fair wages and have retirement security. And she has made it clear that she will work to expand investments in our local industrial and energy infrastructure.”
“Chris is the best candidate to represent the interests of California workers, their families, and their communities,” said Robert Smith, Political Director for IUPAT District Council 36. “She has made it clear that she supports and will seek funding for the kind of apprenticeship training that is the foundation of the excellence represented by the finishing trades and provides a debt-free pathway to union jobs and the middle class.”
“I am honored to receive the support of both IBEW 47 and the IUPAT District Council 36,” said Bubser. “I firmly believe that the road to economic growth in CA-8 relies on a strong labor movement. I will not support policies that do not consider the impact to workers and their families and I will stand by these unions in their fight to elevate the upward mobility, protections and dignity for our workforce.”
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 47 represents more than 9,000 active members and retirees in the district who work in a wide variety of fields, including utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. The IBEW is among the largest unions in the AFL-CIO.
