Majority of California Democratic Party Delegates
Committed to Supporting Bubser in District Trending Toward Democrats
September 17, 2019; Victorville, CA— Congressman Paul Cook’s announcement that he will not seek re-election provides further momentum to the congressional campaign of Democrat Chris Bubser, who has been fundraising and building deep constituent support in California’s 8th congressional district since launching her campaign for the district that has been trending toward Democrats since it was drawn. Republicans currently hold just a four point edge in voter registration, making the seat more Democratic than other districts Democrats won in 2018.
“We are not surprised that Paul Cook is stepping down. He has been increasingly out of touch with the voters in the district and in the face of our energized campaign he recognized that for once he might have to work hard for his votes,” said Chris. “We have unified Democratic leadership in the district and are days away from locking up the California Democratic Party’s formal endorsement. Meanwhile, I have been to every corner of our enormous district to hear from voters about what matters to them.”
In her first fundraising quarter, Chris brought in the largest investment the 8th district has seen since 2012 - and did so without taking a dime from corporate PACs. Bubser's fundraising momentum reflects enthusiasm on the ground for her vision for CA-08 and the representation this district deserves.
“We expect to see a pile of out-of-touch Republicans, including anti-science Assemblyman Jay Obernolte, to announce in the coming days and what they will all have in common is a record of putting themselves and their partisan ideology ahead of the residents of the 8th District,” said Chris. “That’s exactly what’s wrong with Washington and it’s why I decided to run for Congress in the first place. I look forward to solving problems for our district in Washington.”
“While refusing to take a dime of corporate PAC money, Chris Bubser outraised Paul Cook who saw the writing on the wall,” said Senior Communications Advisor Andrea Rothschild. “We have no doubt that the voters of this competitive district will reject the dangerous beliefs of career politician Jay Obernolte who has rejected the science on vaccinations, climate change, and women's healthcare.”
In addition to on-target fundraising from individual donors, with an increasing number coming from the District, the Bubser campaign has confirmed the opening of campaign headquarters office in Victorville. Victorville and the surrounding towns of Hesperia, Adelanto, and Apple Valley represent the district’s highest concentration of voters.
“What the GOP doesn’t realize is how rapidly this district is changing - and not in their favor,” said Chris. “The registration gap between Republicans and Democrats has narrowed significantly and the demographics in the district is trending away from the GOP. There are redder districts that flipped in the last cycle, so we believe we can do this.”
“My campaign is about connecting with people throughout the district and giving them the opportunity to tell me what their needs are — from the rising cost of prescription drugs, to creating more good-paying jobs, to protecting our public lands,” said Chris. “And when I get to Washington, my job will be to continue to listen to and act on behalf of everyone who lives in California’s 8th.”
