Bubser Pledges to Fight Corruption, Special Interests, and Dark Money Influence in Politics
January 21, Victorville, CA -- The campaign of Democrat Chris Bubser announced today that she has received the endorsement of End Citizens United, the organization dedicated to countering the disastrous effects of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision and reforming the campaign finance system. The Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United v. F.E.C. changed the landscape of American elections and opened the door for billionaires and corporations to spend unlimited, untraceable money in America’s elections. Bubser is running to represent California’s 8th district, a seat being vacated by Rep. Paul Cook.
“End Citizens United is proud to endorse Chris Bubser because Californians want leadership that’s only accountable to them, not corporate special interests,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “By rejecting corporate PAC and lobbyist money, Chris is proving to Californians that she’ll always put their needs first.”
“I am so proud to receive this endorsement because I believe that overturning Citizens United is essential to the survival of our democracy,” said Bubser. “Corporations make enormous contributions to our society, but Citizens United opened the doors to unfettered influence on our elected officials which benefit only the very richest and most powerful in our society. This imperils the principle of ‘justice for all’ and the integrity of our electoral process.”
Bubser is a former biotechnology advisor who has made access to affordable healthcare a pillar of her campaign promise to the residents of California’s 8th District. When she launched her campaign, Bubser pledged not to take any campaign contributions from corporate PACs or federally registered lobbyists and has reiterated her pledge today. Her campaign has been funded almost entirely by thousands of individual contributions by people who care about the 8th and future of our country and our planet.
Charlie Baran, a campaign spokesperson, said of Chris’s GOP opponent: “Jay Obernolte has no problem taking his direction from the fossil fuel industry and their lobbyists. He’s taken thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Chevron, Phillips 66, and Tesoro and turns around and claims we don’t know how to combat climate change. So can we really trust him with our public lands and to make the right decisions for our children? And his history of taking money from big tobacco speaks for itself.”
The 8th congressional district stretches along much of California’s eastern border, and includes parts of San Bernardino County, and all of Inyo and Mono counties. The district includes, among others, the communities of Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow, Bishop, Hesperia, Highland, Lone Pine, Mammoth Lakes, Needles, Trona, Twentynine Palms, Victorville, Yucaipa, and Yucca Valley, and Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks.
