California Federation of Teachers Backs Chris Bubser for Congress
Bubser Is Committed to Restoring California’s Leadership in Providing a World-Class Education to Our Children and Future
February 11, Victorville, CA -- Democrat Chris Bubser, who is running for Congress in California’s 8th District, has won the endorsement of the California Federation of Teachers (CFT). Bubser, who comes from a family of educators and is a product of public education herself, has pledged to fight for investing more in public schools and improving the working conditions for our nation’s teachers and improving the quality of instruction and school safety for students.
"On behalf of the more than 120,000 teachers and classified professionals who make up the California Federation of Teachers, we are proud to support Chris Bubser's campaign for Congress," said CFT President Jeffery Freitas. "Chris has impressed us with her strong commitment to ensuring schools, teachers, and classified workers have what they need to serve the young people and families of California, and deliver the highest quality education possible. In Chris we see someone who will always put our kids, our families, and our public servants first."
Bubser’s main Republican challengers have dismal education records. Assemblymember Jay Obernolte has an anemic 50% rating from the CFT, which reflects how Obernolte failed to protect students and teachers by voting to make it easier for private citizens with no training to carry guns on school property. Tim Donnelly, on the other hand, withdrew his children from public school in 2014, actually supports cutting funding for public schools, saying “The Dept. of Education needs to be dismantled and abolished.”
Bubser has gained the support of many teachers in CA-08 who have been working on her campaign since it launched. “There is no profession I have more respect for than teachers,” said Bubser. “We must work harder to prepare and attract people to this noble profession and then make sure we can retain them by trusting them, respecting them, and giving them the freedom and tools to teach.”
“As a proud graduate of public schools,” continued Bubser. “I know that quality public education is a pillar of our democracy, and I firmly believe that as a society investing in our children and our future means we must provide a well-funded start that begins with early education and continues through public elementary and secondary education, as well as accessible higher education. This is absolutely fundamental to the cause of making the United States better for working families and also for ensuring the viability of our economy.”
Bubser has also been endorsed by Victor Valley Union High School District Board President Penny Edmiston and Member Caleb Castaneda, and Victor Elementary School District Board Member Clayton Moore. Other labor endorsements for Bubser include AFL-CIO, Teamsters, California Labor Federation, Inland Empire Labor Council, Kern-Inyo-Mono Labor Council, Service Employees International Union, and a host of others. The 8th Congressional District stretches along much of California’s eastern border, and includes parts of San Bernardino County, and all of Inyo and Mono counties. The district includes, among others, the communities of Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow, Bishop, Hesperia, Highland, Lone Pine, Mammoth Lakes, Needles, Trona, Twentynine Palms, Victorville, Yucaipa, and Yucca Valley, and Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks.
