BUBSER EXPONENTIALLY OUT-RAISES EIGHT CHALLENGERS THROUGH A GROUNDSWELL OF GRASSROOTS SUPPORT
CA-08 Democrat Remains Steadfast in Her Pledge to Refuse Corporate PAC Money
February 5, Victorville, CA -- On the heels of launching her first digital ads in the upcoming primary election, the campaign of Chris Bubser, the only woman in the race, announced that it has out-raised all eight of her opponents vying for the open seat to represent California’s 8th District. Bubser’s fundraising momentum continues, all without accepting a dime from corporate PACs.
As reported, the campaign raised $207,341.66 in the fourth quarter of 2019 and finished with $340,096.50 cash on hand. This raise is more than one hundred times larger than the $2,056.20 raised by the only other Democrat to file and brings Bubser’s total number of individual contributions to more than 2,600.
Bubser’s report dwarfs the contributions received from the top three GOP challengers as well. Tim Donnelly, who represents the most extremist faction of the party raised $87,066, followed by the $82,390 raised by Jeremy Staat. Jay Obernolte raised an anemic $65,562, of which only $37,563 came from individuals, and has been forced to shore up his coffers through a self-loan to adequately fund his campaign.
Obernolte’s ability to self-fund hasn’t stopped him from welcoming large contributions from destructive corporate interests or traveling by private jet to campaign fundraisers. Obernolte has accepted $42,000 in campaign contributions from oil interests and $21,300 from tobacco companies. Obernolte’s personal wealth comes from a video game company whose origin story was described in a recent campaign mailer. Although the company remained unnamed, the story was strikingly similar to the formation of Facebook.
"It’s vital that we hold Washington accountable by fighting against the corruption and big money special interests that continue to influence our representatives and undermine the democratic will and wishes of the voters,” said Chris Bubser. “I will only ever answer to the voters in California’s 8th District and that's why I refuse to accept a dime from corporate PACs.”
Notably, Bubser recently gained the endorsement of End Citizens United, based on her pledge not to take contributions from corporate lobbyists and to work on campaign finance reform in Congress.
The 8th Congressional District stretches along much of California’s eastern border, and includes parts of San Bernardino County, and all of Inyo and Mono counties. The district includes, among others, the communities of Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow, Bishop, Hesperia, Highland, Lone Pine, Mammoth Lakes, Needles, Trona, Twentynine Palms, Victorville, Yucaipa, and Yucca Valley, and Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks.
